Yr 3 and 4 Athletics Team dominate in Wandsworth Competition!

On Tuesday 15th March, 26 Yr 3 and 4 children took part in the Wandsworth Sportshall Athletics Competition against 5 other local schools.  For many, this was their first competitive event and nerves were jangling at the start of the first race.  However, with the guidance of Morris and Miss Westwood, the Ravenstone athletes channeled all their nervous energy and produced some magnificent performances.

The girls kicked things off with some fantastic sprint races and relays including the obstacle relay which is always a tricky one.  Notable performances came from Sophie and Chantelle in the 1 lap sprint; Sophia, Mia, Imogen  and Hannah in the 1 lap relay and Shannon, Samantha, Amina and Lottie in the 2 lap relay.

The boys followed suit showing some fantastic team work and excellent running technique in the track events.  Strong performances came from Ruben and Haile in the sprint; Nural, Daniel, Barnaby and Sonny in the 1 lap relay and Alec, Vincente and Myles in the 2 lap sprint relay.

The hardest and most feared event is the 6 lap race which is a real test of endurance.  Ravenstone dominated this event with Sophie, Sophia, Reuben and Haile picking up maximum points for the team.

In the field, Mia and Koto picked up valuable points in the Speed Bounce; Sophie and Sophia were ‘Jumpers Extrodinaire’ and Shannon launched the javelin into gold medal position.  Haile and Jack were double Triple Jump winners and Reuben and Taryn showcased their fast feet in winning the Speed Bounce.

Before the final track races, Morris powered into first place winning the reknowned ‘Teachers’ Race’ in fine form.  His quick turns off the boards and lightning speed impressed the entire competition with the Ravenstone athletes brimming with pride when he collected his medal.

The final events were the Over and Under Relay and 4 X 1 lap Relay where both the Boys and Girls Team showed great comraderie and teamwork.  Ravenstone were crowned the winners with a whopping 450 points, nearly 60 points ahead of their closest rivals, Honeywell School.

Miss Westwood and Morris were very proud of the children’s performances, but  most of all they were impressed with the way that they conducted themselves and their postitive attitude and respect for their team and fellow competitors.  They have been a pleasure to coach and all their hard work really has paid off.

A big thank you also, to the parental support which always lifts the team and provides a great atmosphere at the competitions.  We look forward to many more in the future.

Ravenstone athletes miss out on County Championship title by 6 points!

On Wednesday 9th March, 24 Ravenstone athletes travelled to Brixton Recreation Centre to take part in the Central London Primary Final. The successful 2011 squad had qualified for the final in style when winning the 2011 Wandsworth Borough Championships in February for a third year in a row!

The Year 5 and 6 children faced tough competition from the top 5 school athletics county teams and the nerves were beginning to show in warm up. After a motivational team talk from Morris the children were off to a flying start in the obstacle relay and 1 lap race with a fine display of speed and smooth change-overs.

The team continued to pull together and secure valuable points in the field events where they out jumped the competition and speed bounced in impressive style.

With the final sprint relays to be decided, Ravenstone were neck and neck with Granton Primary School of Lambeth who had secured fantastic wins in the javelin and 6 lap races. As the starting gun went off, Ravenstone blasted into the lead in the 4x1 lap relay in both the Girls and Boys races, with Granton snapping at their heels.

Tensions were mounting as the results were announced…..Ravenstone had narrowly missed the County Championship title by just 6 points to the winners, Granton Primary School.

Although, the children were disappointed not to retain the County title, they were very proud of their efforts. Both Morris and Miss Westwood were very pleased with how they worked together as a team and how they conducted themselves.

To come second in the whole of London is an enormous achievement and Morris and Miss Westwood would like to say a huge thank you to the Athletics Team for their dedication and effort in their training throughout the year. Thank you too, for all the parents’ support and encouragement in the 2010-2011 Sports Hall Athletics season.

On Tuesday 1st February, a strong team of 24 Year 5 and 6 athletes competed at Battersea Sports Centre in the Wandsworth Schools Sportshall Athletics Final.

The team had qualified for the final by winning in the qualifying competition two weeks before, with Furzedown School chasing their tails qualifying in second place.

Before the competition commenced, there was a minutes silence in memory of Jeff Davidson who was a keen supporter of sport at Ravenstone as well as being quite a sportsman himself – he completed the London Marathon twice! With Jeff in mind, the Ravenstone athletes were spurred on to win and dedicate their victory to him.

The pressure was on from the outset with Heathmere and Furzedown racing from the blocks to secure first and second place in the ‘over and under relay’ and 1 lap races. Ravenstone were feeling nervous but they composed themselves and refocused resulting in some fantastic sprinting which gave them a slight advantage over their rivals at half way.

In the field events, notable wins came from Wiktoria in the chest push who propelled the medicine ball 8 metres through the air; Natasha and Josh who jumped their way to victory in the ‘standing longjump’; Anna and Rhianna whose fast feet won the ‘speedbounce’; and Jevonte who hopped, stepped and jumped his way into first place.

With the boost of the field event points, Ravenstone went into the final track races focused, knowing that if they made any mistakes it could cost them the title. The team pulled together and showed some great fitness and teamwork with wins coming from the Girls’ ‘over and under’ relay as well as the Boys claiming victory in the 4 x 1 lap relay.

As the results were announced, Morris feared that Furzedown had taken the first place spot after their blistering start earlier in the day. The tension mounted as the top 3 places were announced……Ravenstone had won with 560 points, 60 points ahead of their rivals Furzedown (500 points) and Heathmere (466 points)!

The team were elated with Morris and Miss Westwood jumping around the Sportshall too! This is the third time that Ravenstone have become Wandsworth Borough Champions and this has never been done by a school before. They now go on to compete and defend their title in the London Borough Finals in March. They will be competing against 6 schools from each London Borough at Brixton Sports Centre.

The Athletics Team, Morris and Miss Westwood would like to say a huge thank you to the parents who came to support them on Tuesday – your cheers and encouragement lifted the team when the nerves started to take over!

(Athletics Club will be running on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday lunchtimes in the lead up to the final. Please make sure that your child wears trainers on these days.)
