Friday 21st May 2010

Dear Parents/Carers,

Half term is fast approaching, the sun is shining:

NEXT WEEK IS ECO WEEK: We have many fun and awareness raising events going on: Paper making, water workshops, Eco Poet, an art installation made from your rubbish, 4.30pm Thurs, followed by Eco Wear 5:00pm, our ethical fashion show opened by our MP Sadiq Khan, Toy Swap, Eco Quilt etc.
SPORTS NEWS: More Successes: 1) SWIMMING: At the regional gala on Saturday 15th May our squad of 20 Y4/5/6 competed against four other local schools (Furzedown, Holy Ghost, Honeywell and Sacred Heart) at Putney pool. On a thrilling night our Girls were 2nd and Boys joint 1st, so both teams again progress to the borough finals on 12/6/10. Sarah Austin & Laura Hurley

2) FOOTBALL: a) We have continued our matches in the local Y5/6 league and finished a very creditable third overall b) On 19/5/10 we entered Wandsworth Sports Development Y4/5 five-a-side tournament at Wandle recreation centre and out of 15 teams Ravenstone were CHAMPIONS! The whole squad were amazing remaining unbeaten throughout the whole tournament, defeating Honeywell in the semi-final and Brandlehow in the final. Nile W (Y4) was Player of the Tournament, out of nearly 90! Richard Huie

We are very proud of our sporting achievements and are always keen to get more children involved. We are participating in National Sports week, w/b 28/6/10, so look out for a range of fun sporty events. Emily Domaingue, Morris Tolaram

BIG DANCE 2010: as you know, we are BIG on Dance, which is why every child will be taking part in the BIG DANCE 2010 on Friday 9th July, as well as preparing for our end of term shows. Big Dance 2010 invites everyone to do 20 minutes dance to participate in a Guinness World Record attempt at 1:00pm on Friday 9th July. There are different versions of the dance, so anyone can take part. Practise with your family and friends at www.bigdance2010.com Rhian Robbins

BRITISH LAND CHESS CHALLENGE: On Saturday 1st May, Jacques and Olivier M, Alec K and Oliver M attended the regional ‘Megafinal’ of this national chess competition. The first three progress to the ‘Gigafinal’ in July. This is a wonderful achievement and many congratulations to them all. (I have challenged them all and am being soundly thrashed each Friday!)

PTA LADIES VITALITY NIGHT: Many thanks to Claire Conway, Jo Turner, Valerie McLean, Sara Walls, Kitty Nosworthy, Suzanne Shaw, Sue Metcalfe, Sarah Hill, Ruth Alexander-Smith, Katherine Harvey and Bridget Palmer (+ anyone else) for organising and helping at the wonderfully successful Vitality Night on 7/5/10. I understand all had a brilliant relaxing time and the event raised in excess of £850 for the PTA! Fantastic!

PTA CAKE AND CRAFT SALE: Many thanks to everyone who organised, set up, sold and cleared up, at the Craft Fair and Cake sale on 14/5/10 which was another great success raising over £650 in a very short time.

WAITROSE DONATION: I mentioned in my last newsletter that Waitrose, Balham, were collecting their ‘green discs’ for us. The PTA received a cheque for £262. Wonderful and many thanks for those who put the ‘green’ in!
MUSIC: Celebrate Wandsworth Arts Festival Shimmy Sing 2010 in Putney (23rd). Our Ravenstone Singers (Y3-6) will be joining with other local choirs to celebrate singing and to perform ‘Celebrate Community’, a piece especially commissioned for this event and written by our very own MJ Paranzino!

BEST ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY: I mentioned in my last letter that we are attempting to make our ‘Good’ attendance even better and we have launched a range of strategies to do so. The results have been very impressive, average attendance since we started this is over 96%! The first winner, and class going for a free Pizza Express lunch next Thursday, is Mrs Schulenberg’s Y4.

HALF TERM: Finally a reminder that we break for half term next Friday 28th May and children return to school on TUESDAY 8th June (Mon 7th is Inset day)

With Best Wishes
