Ravenstone Primary School

PE and Sport Premium

At Ravenstone, PE and Sport are a very important part of school life. By the time our pupils leave us at the end of Key Stage 2, the Ravenstone PE Curriculum ensures they/there:

  • develop pupils’ physical, psychological, social and emotional wellbeing
  • build competence and confidence
  • are active across a diverse range of sports and physical activities
  • enjoyment and motivation encourages lifelong participation and healthy, active lifestyle choices
  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • learn, think, read, write and speak like sportspersons
  • develop positive relationships with physical activity
  • move with confidence
  • know the importance of leading healthy, active lives and how to achieve this.

The acquisition and development of PE knowledge and skills begins in the Early Years - in particular, within the area of learning entitled ‘Personal Development’. Here we create an ethos of curiosity, exploration, and a love of learning through purposefully planned responses to pupils’ interests, continuous provision, high quality interactions, real-life experiences and a stimulating, enabling, language-rich indoor and outdoor learning environment.

To achieve its intentions, in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, pupils have two PE lessons per week working through one unit at a time. Each unit’s focus forms part of a diverse and substantial range of sports and physical activities:

  • Locomotion
  • Invasion games: hockey, tag rugby, netball, football
  • Dance: thematic dance, traditional dance
  • Gymnastics: floor, flight, parkour
  • Health and wellbeing: fitness, mindfulness, meditation
  • Outdoor adventure activities: teambuilding, orienteering, problem solving
  • Athletics (including Sports Education)
  • Swimming and water safety (our aim is for children to swim confidently and unaided to at least 25 m)
  • Net and wall games: rounders, tennis, cricket, badminton
  • Striking and Fielding games

The Department for Education (DfE) wants all children to have equal access to high-quality PE provision and opportunities to experience and participate in a wide range of sports and physical activities. Schools should aim to provide high-quality PE and sport for at least 2 hours a week, complemented by a wide range of extracurricular sport and competitive opportunities. By providing this PE and Sport Premium it can help improve children’s health and wellbeing, personal development as well as academic attainment.

Schools should use it to:

  • make additional and sustainable improvements to the PE, sport and physical activity they provide
  • provide or improve equal access to sport for boys and girls
  • ensure teachers have the relevant skills and knowledge to confidently teach PE in a structured way, prioritising continued professional development (CPD) and training where needed
