Rights Respecting
Ravenstone is a Unicef Rights Respecting School (RRS)
We began our RRS journey in 2023 and since then our work and commitment has been recognised and we have been awarded a Bronze Rights Committed Award on behalf of Unicef UK.
We are currently working towards the Silver Award, and the children are learning about their rights by putting them daily into practice.
As a Rights Respecting School, we are all working together to ensure that our school is a place where children’s rights are at the heart of our ethos and culture. We believe that the Rights Based Approach improves well-being and develops every child’s talents and abilities to their full potential. Learning about rights, through rights and for rights provides the children with the knowledge and understanding of their rights as well as other people’s, and is a platform for learning about global citizenship and sustainable development. We set standards that children can expect, but also empower children to challenge when these standards are not met. By becoming a Rights Respecting School and working towards the different stages and awards, we want to ensure that Ravenstone is a community where children’s rights are lived, learned and understood.
Being a Rights Respecting School is not just about what children (rights holders) do and learn but also, importantly, what adults (duty-bearers) do. We ensure that the children’s rights are promoted and realised and adults and children work towards this goal together. Parents and carers are also duty bearers, responsible for upholding children’s rights. It is therefore important that the whole school community is involved in the process and we share our learning about rights.
Our wonderful Rights Respecting School Ambassadors are working hard to ensure that the rights of the child are at the forefront of all we do.
Unicef is the world’s leading organisation working for children and young people and their rights. In 1989, governments across the world agreed that all children have the same rights by adopting the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). These rights are based on what a child needs to survive, grow, participate and fulfil their potential.
Please see below for further information about the Convention on the Rights of the Child CRC) and look out for more RRS updates and activities in the Ravenstone Weekly Newsletter.
